How it works
A note from Seth, the developer.
Amply is a project I've been thinking about for two years. I've written music for many years, and I love the process of recording something new: mixing sounds together into something you can feel, something you want to share.
But as a musician, I also know how hard it is to be a musician. Like many others, I went a different route and studied software development, which is now another passion of mine. I had the idea for Amply two years ago, and it took me those two years to figure out a way for it to actually work. It's something I'm really passionate about, and my dream is to make streaming profitable for artists.
What is Amply?
Amply is a tool that sets up a streaming service for artists, completely owned by them. It helps them with hosting, payments, GDPR and managing their music. Alongside that, there's a free listening app that anyone can download and use.
Artists can sell their music per stream, by the month or year, or sell songs and albums outright. They decide the price, and they get all of the money (apart from the payment provider's fees, like Stripe's).
How does Amply make money?
It doesn't. This is my passion project, and I want to genuinely help artists. In the future I might add a small one-time payment for Amply's setup tool, but for now it will remain free.
How does Amply avoid licensing and royalties?
Amply is a tool, not a music service. Each artist's streaming service runs on hosting in their own name, and Amply is only involved in setting it up. Once it's set up, Amply removes its own access.
That means Amply doesn't sell, hold or control any music at all. Music is never uploaded to Amply, and when you listen, it streams straight from the artist's own service to you, without passing through Amply. Payments go straight to the artist too, so Amply never touches the money.
The listening app is a free tool that Amply doesn't make any money from. Like a web browser, it simply plays what artists publish themselves. The artist is the one publishing their music, just as they would on their own website.
Amply also doesn't store any list of artists to recommend in the listening app. This means artists are responsible for marketing their own streaming services. Each artist has a link that can be opened in the listening app, unlocking their music.
Thank you for using Amply!
